Prayagraj

Prayagraj is believed to be the most important pilgrimage centre for Hindus. Traditionally river confluences are regarded as auspicious places, but in Sangam, the significance of the confluence is most pious because here, the holy Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati meet to become one.
Etymology. The location at the confluence of Ganges and Yamuna rivers has been known in ancient times as Prayāga, which means “place of a sacrifice” in Sanskrit (pra-, “fore-” + yāj-, “to sacrifice”). It was believed that god Brahma performed the very first sacrifice (yāga, yajna) in this place.

According to the epic Ramayana, Chitrakoot is the place where Bharat, brother of Lord Rama came to visit him and asked him to return to Ayodhya and rule the kingdom. It is believed that the supreme Gods of Hinduism, (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva) took incarnations here.
The epic Ramayana tells us that Ram, Sita and Lakshman took refuge in the woods of Chitrakoot when they went on vanvaas or exile. They spent 11 years, 11 months and 11 days in the forests of Chitrakoot, in present-day Uttar Pradesh (and some parts in Madhya Pradesh).
